Is the time ripe for South Africa’s return to the Formula 1 grand prix calendar?

According to documents in the possession of Wheels 24, investors intend building a full F1-specification circuit within a retail, lifestyle, tourism, commercial and technology centre.

A site near Durban’s recently built King Shaka International Airport has been earmarked for development, and a proposal recently presented to kZN’s provincial treasury department.

It is a good thing, however they must make the tickets affordable, as an average South African I cannot afford the average price of R4 000 per ticket, considering that I must go with my wife and child.

Hmmm, we havent gotton over the big spend over the new soccer Stadium, no money for maintenance and upkeep and already we are spending money on a race track. Lets use the R3billion for a suitable transport system between JHB & Durban for passengers & rail and have less deaths on the road. Afterall, how much of money is been spent on clean up and emergency services during a truck accident, bus accident or reckless taxi drivers. Lets pay a better tribute to something related to a engine.

ticket prices, sky high. FIA introducing new rules, ridiculous. Government supporting this event, maybe. Hosting a grand prix in South Africa, priceless.

Why build another test track, when South Africa has good tracks like Kyalami, Phakisa, etc. that can be upgraded at a fraction of the cost to build a new one's. It will end up like the new soccer stadiums that is already ending up as under utilized and at the end of the day, the man on street will have to end up with the bill.

How many more times are these opportunistic types going to regurgitate the SA Formula 1 wet dream? It's always about someone getting rich quickly at the expense of other people, not about bringing jobs or even motor sport to the country.

I have been lucky enough to visit an average of 2 races every year and have to agree that the ticket prices are too expensive.
The Turkish Grand prix this year only had 66000 people over the 3 day weekend.
As much as I would like to see it back in SA , I do not think it viable to do so, we can use the money to build a white elephant circuit better elsewhere.

Forget about the capital outlay, but with an annual revenue stream (estimated) at 950 million Rand and an annual cost of 2,3 billion Rand, it will never fly. This despite the thousands of petrolheads in South Africa.

Can we all just come back to earth. Its the easiest thing in the world to draw a nice track on paper.
Judging by the crummy attendances at South African race meetings a Grand Prix will just attract the rich socialites who need to "be seen" pretty much like World Cup. Paris Hilton in Durban to watch soccer????
Yes watching a race live would be exciting but you don't really know whats going on.
A friend went up to the 1977 GP in SA when Tom Pryce was killed and when I spoke to him straight after the race on the phone he was unaware of the incident as he had been stuck at another corner.
Local motorsport will lose potential sponsors and spend by local fans so I give it a big thumbs down.

What a load of trash! look carefully at the proposed track and you will see 'Gautrain yard' at the top. Who is bluffing who? Just another scam to screw money out of the corrupt ANC government that all of us taxpayers will eventually have to fork out for!

It would be so great to get F1 back to SA. Wherever it will take place, I hope it will be soon!
I think it would be a great plus to host a great Sport attraction as F1 on an annual base. The soccer WC was a big investment for the country, sure it was great (in my eyes), but it's gone now. F1 would be a big investment as well, but I believe that we will receive the benefits from it in a long term.

We want it so that all new Super cars can get the chance of testing on track without travelling to Kyalami

It would be awesome to have the F1 in SA!!! Ticket prices seems a bit steep for the ordinary ‘man in the street’ though. ANITA

That track map has got nothing to do with Durban or Natal. Where are all those housing developments that are depicted surrounding the track out at Durban airport?. It is a map of the area of Allendale road next to the N1 Freeway between the Buccleugh interchange and the new Allendale Bridge. They are building that whole new housing / business / commercial development there that will be a small self contained city much like Melrose Arch is supposed to be. That map is the same copy that the development company are using to sell the plots. the roads with the traffic circles and the course of the Jukskie river on it and those curvey road designs are just what is on the design map for that Jo'berg devlopment, along with all those houses.

And think about this, every single track in the country, Kyalami, Zwartkops, East London, PE, Killarney, is under threat from housing develoments that have caught up around them and caused them to now become noise problems. Tracks already lost becasue of development catching up are Snell Parade, Westmead, Rand Airport, Roy Hesketh, Brandwag, Allen Ford stadium, and Kingspark. So now they are going to BUILD a new track, for super noisy Formula 1's, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A HOUSING SUBURB????

I treat this fantasy story with exactly the same respect as I do The Moon Is Made Of Green Cheese scientific discovery.

South Africans have no chance in ever hosting a GP here in SA. The racist ANC government will NEVER come up with the guarantees to host a "elite white only" sport.
