Despite protests, government will go ahead with a carbon tax on the owners of double cabs. Do you agree with the emissions tax? http://www.wheels24.co.z...hit-double-cabs-20100804

What I don't understand, is why there should be any difference between passenger cars and commercial vehicles. In fact, it's the commercial ones that tend to generate the most CO2. In my opinion, all vehicles, regardless if they are passenger cars, commercial vehicles or even industrial ones, should be on the same sliding scale model for CO2 emmissions. Little tax down low, massive tax for the bad ones.

Economic Destruction 101

What will be interesting is if "politicians" will be exempted from this tax, Here is what we do people of South Africa, how to destroy an economy 101 1. You tax people for their vechicles they drive, or sell which is passed on to the consumers and it increase will result in the loss of jobs and Goverment wonders why there is no direct foreign investment in South Africa.

And what about modified cars some are hectic modified that will make most double cabs seem like they standing still, so will the tax apply to such vechicles, just seems to be a bit of POWER TRIP by someone with the intention to annoy, destroy, and create unemployment.

And there are not many alternatives to petrol or diesel engines, so what must be pull out the horse and cart. Uhm horse sh**

With the condition of the roads in SA you cant venture out of town in any thing other than a bakkie or SUV with full size tyres. Low profiles and fancy alloys dont work on rural roads. I learned the hard way. The tax wont go to improving roads or any environmental issues either.

Why dont we just turn into a communistic country. At the end of the day, 80% of our salary goes to goverment in some way anyway. What the heck are we working for. Electricity hikes , new toll fees on highways, feul levies, property taxes, all revised to take us for more. This on top historically heavily taxed citizens. Where's the benefit of living in SA, down the tubes where it is. It really pi***s me off.

Ahead of the September 1 introduction of the CO2 tax, the AA is adding its voice to the tax outcry. The association has said that in all other countries where carbon tax has been introduced, the sale of the correct quality fuel has also been allowed. What do you make of this?

This has nothing to do with wanting to reduce carbon emissions, its just another way for the government to suck money out of an already over-taxed population. Obviously the people who can afford double cabs and SUVs have plenty of lolly so let's target them. If they were really serious about reducing the carbon emissions in this country, they wouldn't be investing billions in new coal-fired power stations, they'd be building solar farms in the Karoo!

Before you purchase a new car just tell the dealer to register it on the dealers name. Then purchase the vehicle as a demo. No Carbon Tax. I have given up on the government. Between Trevor Manuals arrogance, Pravin Gordhan's tax collecting and the greed/corruption of the politicians, they going to through us into a economic depression. I think of Trevor and Pravin as the famous characters, King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Just waiting for some robin hood political party to arrive on the scene

Thing is, the tax is unfair. If it were genuinely intended to combat pollution, then those who drive most and furthest should pay the most. However this tax is merely added to the price of the (new) car according to its CO2 emissions rating. So, even if you bought the car to put on a plinth in your lounge, you are still paying the same "emissons" tax as somebody who does 100 000km a year.

I drive a Merc Benz 220 CDi. It has averaged 6.1 l/100km for the past 30 000km, which is the best I have done with any vehicle I have ever owned. Will I be taxed because it is a "bigger" car than the "smaller" one's I have owned before? I f so, something is not right!

This really does not bother me in the slightest.... I have never and will never buy a car new, not in this shaithole of a country anyhow.....

besides, I'll much rather build my own before I'll ever consider buying one...

here is an interesting question.... how many years in jail can one get for financially supporting an institution that involves itself with Money laundering, Drug-smuggling, murder, corruption, theft, misinformation..... etc etc etc....

hmm.... kind of makes you think Why you pay your taxes, doesn't it....

Valid Comments. Consider the following Michelle and "Dealer Stock" Guest.

The tax is levied at point of import or manufacturing thus the vehicle price increases.
All used vehicles was ones new and thus the price filters through eventually to the used vehicle price.
Reg. the vehicle even in the dealers name does not change the amount of money the vehicle owes or the taxes issued at source.
The gov. still have not answered the question of VAT. at point of sale on Tax levied.
But then 50% of the price you pay for a vehicle in S.A goes to the goverment in any case and they dont have a problem charging us VAT on Tax at the moment so why will they change it for the new tax. Next time you curse the manufacturer or brand name or dealer on one of these forums about a new car costing R300 000 + note that half of that is for the car the other half supports the goverment.

I have just read that all cars will be taxed with the new carbon emissions tax. These are not only the new cars being sold in the showrooms as of the 1st of September this year, EVERY secondhand car, according to Mr Gordhan, will also be taxed in some way!! Can anyone confirm or find out how the government plans to judge the emissions on each and every motorvehicle in South Africa. It was noted that the tax would be levied on our yearly licence fees, which means that this will not just be a once off fee when you buy a new vehicle, this will become a continuous leakage from our pockets.

If our government succeeds with this, even the little old lady driving a 1975 VW Beetle will have to pay emissions tax, nevermind the rest of us who own cars older than ten years. I believe that in first world countries, this idealism works as infrastructure and public transport there, are organised and working. Implementing this in our country, won't give us the results that this tax was meant for. This will become just another way for the bureaucrats, who try and manage this country of ours, to laugh their way to the bank once again.

I truely hope that I am proved wrong, but in the meantime I will continue to be pessimistic of the management who runs our country.

Nonsense. This Tax is only successfully applied in Europe where the quality of fuel is superior to ours, AND there is a complex, reliable, and efficient public transport system that serves as a genuine alternative to those who don't even require a car. As for the 4x4's & Double Cabs... SA is a vast nation that millions love exploring. from the Berg in the east, to the skeleton coast on the west. Bakkies/DC's are very much a part of a South African culture's love of 'big' vehicles. Our STUPID politicians are too silly to realise this or actualy think about anything. They are now the only one's who can get their fat selves into 4x4's.
